On their appearance in 1722 the Keys of Spagyric Philosophy were greeted with these words in the Journal des savants: “Those who remain unaware of Spagyric Philosophy will find here an abridged form of the elements of this science, and given its principles could not select a book examining them more effectively”. Because of this, this important alchemical treatise, lauded and quoted by Canseliet and Fulcanelli, comprises “a natural introduction to the study of the general system of hermetic philosophy”, as René Alleau wrote, adding that it did not strike him as “unlikely that Le Brethon had far to go on his journey to achieving the Magnum Opus”, the processes of which are unveiled by the precious aphorisms of the Keys. However, if this work, now a classic, is well known, the face of its author remains a shadowy mystery. Some light is shed on it by the study which Sylvain Maon dedicates to this Adept whose full name was Jean-Baptiste Le Brethon. Accompanying this study comes the complete translation of the thesis which Le Brethon offered in support of his act, dedicated to that vital magnetism which occupies such a key role in the Keys.
