This is a remarkably well-documented work (a number of sources taken from Paris National Library manuscripts), which examines the sociology of the Knights Templar, its organisation, armament, attire, the manner in which the Grand Master is elected, the holding of chapters, conventual life... This in-depth study is preceded by a description of the social life of the Middle Ages (chivalry, guilds of tradesmen, economic and religious life), from the year one thousand until the creation of the Order of the Militia of Christ (another name for the Order of the Knights Templar). The author, Alain Desgris, a teacher at Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, is considered by the press as one of the most objective writers on the subject.
