Description

Rather than playing music from Leonardo’s time, I used his paintings as a starting point, and worked on what the secret music of his paintings could be and what music was conveyed by his works...” Denis Raisin Dadre therefore chose fifteen paintings, including The Baptism of Christ, The Annunciation, The Virgin of the Rocks, the Portrait of Isabella D’Este, Saint John the Baptist and of course the Mona Lisa.  He then associated them with music by Jacob Obrecht (1457-1505), Josquin Desprez (1450-1521), lauds devoted to the Annunciation and songs of Pétrarque's texts, accompanied by the lyra de bracio, an instrument played by Da Vinci and by fifteenth century humanists and poets like Marcile Ficin or Pic de la Marandole.

While the approach is scientific, allowing the listener to discover the music of Da Vinci's contemporaries, it is also eminently poetic, letting us delve into the genius’s inner universe.

An attractive book accompanies the CD, complete with colour reproductions and close ups of Da Vinci’s paintings, together with texts by Denis Raisin Dadre explaining his choices.
