Observing the decline of the Church of his time, Swedenborg sees in it the signs of a profound mortal illness afflicting the whole of Christianity. A true Christian religion should offer the new foundation of a Christian era. Above the entrance to a temple, which Swedenborg saw in a vision, and which heralds the forthcoming Church of the Lord, were written the words Nunc Licet. They mean: Now, through understanding and reason are you permitted to penetrate the mysteries of faith. Thanks to the true Christian religion, the reader leaves behind the misunderstandings that appeared all too often in Christianity regarding the message of Jesus and the person he was, which have had such undesirable consequences. He aligns himself with the purity of the Gospel.
