Description

On inspecting the Christian sarcophagi of the first centuries or the paintings adorning the tombs, one might be surprised by the large number of Christ’s miracles they feature. Only a reading of the authors who discussed the Gospels in the first centuries can shed any light on the meaning which the Ancients placed on them. The author here examines the episodes which gave rise to the largest number of images, including the Adoration of the Magi, healing (of the blind, the paralysed...), the resurrections, the multiplication of the loaves and that of the wine at the Marriage at Cana. They revolve around the central idea of Christ the healer and miracle maker. All of these episodes were afforded a symbolic meaning which, far from being reserved for the educated, was part of the Christian teachings of everyday believers, which explains why they wished for them to be depicted in their final resting place. Their study offers the modern day reader an original, authentic and vibrant perspective on early Christianity.
