The Mirror of simple and annihilated souls reveals a spiritual wealth which puts its author Marguerite Porete in the ranks of St John of the Cross, Meister Echkart or Hadewijch d'Anvers. Is Love really subject to something other than itself? Could that be morality, religion, or God himself? The power and audacity of these questions travel the centuries to speak to all those who "demand pure love". The winds of liberty blow through the pages, in a breath which comes from the Spirit itself. The Church of the era could neither understand nor tolerate such liberty: excommunicated, Marguerite Porete refused to renounce herself, continuing to testify to liberty in her book, which gives us the opportunity to travel alongside this remarkable woman, who was burnt at the stake in Paris in 1310.
