In 12th Century Cordoba, before being tortured and hanged, a Jewish artisan has a final opportunity to reveal to his nephew how to obtain the book which is “most important ever to be written by man”. Thrust into this quest through Europe and Morocco, Maimonides meets a young Muslim, Averroes, who is trained in the same discipline. Both of these individuals - who are to become eminent intellectuals - are pursued by a mysterious group determined to do anything within their power to prevent them from establishing a Brotherhood of enlightened minds. The majority of the characters in this novel actually existed. The majority of the political and personal events with that they face took place. Everything leads us to believe that at this crucial moment in the history of the world, the greatest of Jewish thinkers and Muslim philosophers enjoyed the exact kind of dialogue that we see here.
