Description

From a symbolic and mystic point of view, the spiral takes on a particular importance, as it represents both the universe and the evolution of individual consciousness. It is synonymous with movement, cosmic energy, inhalation and exhalation, birth and death, order and chaos. In this reference work, re-edited at long last, Jill Purce retraces the meaning and scope of this symbol, from the double spirals of the Stone Age right through to the interlinked spirals of Chinese yin and yang, via Celtic crosses, Maori tattoos and Islamic arabesques... The superb illustrations offered for our contemplation enable us to enter the more intimate confines of the mystic dimension of this symbol.
