Doctor Gérard Encausse, also known as Papus, was one of the leading French occultists of the end of the 19th Century. At a very young age, he organised the Martinist Order, founded the Hermetic school and created the reviews The Initiation and The Veil of Isis. His work helped introduce the general public to disciplines such as astrology, alchemy, the Kabbalah, magic… His Elementary treatise on occultism and astrology, viewed as a great classic of Golden Age esotericism, was completely unavailable for a number of years. The edition which we offer here is the only complete version currently available. In it, Papus deals with the tradition’s great themes: the constitution of man, the astral plan, secret societies and the initiates, Christ’s mission, the power of prayer, reincarnation and astrology to name but a few.
