In Being God within God, Meister Eckhart presents his own experience of the extinction of the ego (and created things) in God (the Uncreated). He recounts his exploration of the divine nature and the links binding it to man. Eckhart's spiritual teaching is based on an exhortation to detachment from "all which is not God", an expression he often uses. Renouncement of all belongings in this way is necessary to a union with God and for the disciple to be able to welcome God into his heart. It consists not so much of freedom from internal contingencies as a nourishment of inwardness. In this way man can become a receptacle where God can reside: this is the meaning of man becoming divine, as he comes to realize his true destiny.
