Psychiatrist Jacques Vigne examines the relationships between healing and spirituality, and the practice of meditation in particular. The mind influences the body, as shown by the phenomenon of psychosomatic self-healing. In the same way, neurosciences have shown that the benefits of meditation are numerous. Meditation also influences emotions. According to Jacques Vigne two types of meditation may bring about healing: concentration meditation, which calms the mind and quickly brings about peace and inner joy, and observation meditation, which allows for understanding of the mental mechanisms that make us suffer in order to break away from them. This book examines the different types of oriental meditation, and provides clarifications supported by recent discoveries in psychology and neuroscience. He studies sleep, dream and profound trance mechanisms, and their similarities with meditation. He also draws a parallel between poetry and meditation. Poets, like those who meditate, evoke the impermanence of things and make use of creative vision and introspection.
