Rumi was one of the greatest mystic poets of Islam and is still viewed today as a “master of enlightenment” among Sufis. To him we owe the contribution to spirituality of the notions of beauty and art, the importance of music, dance and love. Rumi is a magnificent poet and author of a considerable anthology of poetry (in Persian). The Mystic Odes provide an excellent example: there he speaks of his ascension, and his descent into the sea of the Divine, upon which he himself is “a speck of foam”.
