In ancient Egypt, Bastet was a benevolent and protective goddess. She loved music and dance. She was believed to have the power to cause eclipses of the sun and moon. Through the lunar cycles, she was associated with fertility.
Gayer-Anderson's cat is named after the British officer and collector who donated this bronze statue to the British Museum in 1947. The cat was probably discovered in Giza in one of the animal cemeteries and dates from the 26th dynasty (664-525 BC).
